justice league: new frontier
Right after work, I zipped over to Best Buy and picked up the newest straight-to-dvd DCU animated movie, Justice League: The New Frontier.  Now while I haven't actually read the graphic novel, I've heard lots of good things about the storyline.  Plus, you know, superheroes...animation...several actors I like doing voices...cool stuff.

I liked it a lot more than Superman: Doomdsay.  Though that *could* be because I'd read the novelization of The Death and Life of Superman comic arc (at least twice) and so knew that there was a *lot* missing from the story.  And while having the story circle around Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) and Martian Manhunter wasn't hugely thrilling to me, there was enough of the characters I like the most (the Big Three - Supes, Bats, and WW) to make me happy.  It was amusing to see WW bigger than Supes -- Darwyn Cooke even commented on it in the special features.  The voiceover from Kennedy's speech at the end was very moving (I get moved by things of patriotic nature but not typically sad things...go figure.)

Still not a huge fan of the particular art style that was used for this tale -- which is admittedly part of the reason I've never picked up The New Frontier trade paperbacks.  But...I may have to see about changing that.  I know there's gotta be a whole lot more story to this even if the 75 minutes was pretty full as it was (though a bit of a slow start).

All-in-all, a satisfying movie.  Color me pleased.

I just hope that their next one, Batman: Gotham Knight (due in July), done by several anime folks is as good.  Oh, and the WW coming up...eventually.  Though Keri Russell doing WW just seems...odd.  I do like Nathan Fillion as Steve Trever, though.  ~grin~

fic recs
During my regular evening perusing of fic in the variety of fandoms I, er, peruse ...  I''ve come across a few I want to rec:

DC Universe (Bat family)
Gargoyles of Gotham by Jen-in-Japan  -- The gargoyles of Gotham remember.  *Short but very wonderful.*

Stargate SG-1 (Sam/Jack)
Clocking Out by nandamai -- It's Jack's last day at the SGC. Naturally, something goes horribly wrong.  *I've read this a few times now and enjoy it every time.*
Perfection by splash_the_cat -- He wouldn't have her any other way. *Cute and funny.*
No Words by Gail R. Delaney -- No words are necessary between them.  *An older fic that I've read a multitude of times, simply because I love it so much, especially the final scene.*
A Simple Change by Rowan Darkstar -- "The first time Daniel saw them kiss, he stared like a 12-year-old." Set post-season 8.   *An interesting Daniel-POV take on Sam/Jack, not one I entirely understand since I never could see Sam/Daniel as a couple, but a good tale nonetheless.*

Maybe more later as I find them...hmm....

first post (finally!)
I thought perhaps I should actually start *using* this LJ rather than it just sitting here.  Not that I really feel like I know what I'm doing...or that I have any real thoughts about what I'm going to put here...

Perhaps I'll start with probably my favorite thing to do: reading.

I just finished (yesterday) rereading No Man's Land by Greg Rucka, the novelization of the No Man's Land comics series from some years back.  The first time I'd read it, I knew just the basics of the characters.  Reading it now after getting back into DC comics (starting somewhat with the Identity Crisis HC and then a bit later with the return of Kara Zor-El Supergirl...though I wish she was more like the DCAU Supergirl) again...  It was different, actually knowing more about who they all were, since prior to that, most of my knowledge about the DC universe came from the various animated series and not really from the comics themselves.

Of course, speaking of the animated series...  I can hardly wait for the new animated DC movies being released.  The trailer for Superman Doomsday looked great!  And the preview trailer for The New Frontier looked very intriguing.  I've read the novelization of the first, but nothing really for the second, so I don't know much about it beyond it being Golden Age.  When I saw that Lucy Lawless was doing Wondy's voice, I had to chuckle.  That oughtta be a kick.
